The UNESCO’s theme for World Book and Copyright Day 2023 is all about Indigenous languages.

There are over 7,000 existing languages – many of which are fast disappearing – the majority spoken by indigenous peoples who represent the greater part of the world’s cultural diversity. It’s a priority to uphold and promote linguistic diversity and multilingualism.

The World Book Day (WBD) is a worldwide celebration of reading and books, held annually on 23 April. This is a symbolic date in world literature as several prominent authors, William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died on this day.

Here is a lovely funny Tiwi story with beautiful illustrations from Alison Lester that we have selected for this special occasion:

NO WAY YIRRIKIPAYI

NO WAY YIRRIKIPAYI

Yirrikipayi the crocodile lives on the Tiwi Islands. he’s hungry. He goes hunting, chasing animals in the sea and on land.
