International Children’s Book Day 2023 is celebrated today, April 2nd, to encourage children to develop their habit of reading as well as encourage literacy, enhance language and thinking skills, and kindle the growth of their imagination.

Founded in 1967, this day is celebrated on or around Hans Christian Andersen‘s birthday, the renowned Danish author most famous for having written over 156 fairy tales in his lifetime. His original tales include The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Nightingale, The Snow Queen, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Match Girl, and many other fantastic stories.

Since 1967, the sponsoring organization International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) decides on a theme for the day and selects a member region to host the day.

The official sponsor of ICBD 2023 is IBBY Greece. The chosen theme is ‘I am a book, read me’.

The International Children’s Book Day 2023 poster is the result of a collaboration between author Vagelis Iliopoulos and illustrator Photini Stephanidi. Together, they wanted to celebrate the power of children’s books in promoting values of equality, diversity and inclusion, as well as connecting people through tolerance and understanding.

IBBY is an international non-profit organization, that represents an international network of people from more than 80 countries who are committed to bringing books and children together.

Activities take place all around the world and they include writing competitions, book award announcements, and events with children’s literature authors.
